Mel Kay featuring Liberté (pronounced “Libert-ae”) are back for a gig and ready to target the theme of dysfunction as part of their two-hour set.

“Each song relates to the pressures and problems we build internally in ourselves and externally through our lives here on Earth,” Kay said.

“The songs are all original and focus on personality disorders, emotional abuse, loss, love and the in-between.

"This gig will reflect them in a story-type fashion – we’re aiming to make each set into a story of personal progression and growth through the hardships of being through these states of being."

“The aim isn’t to promote these things but to show the effect they can have on those around us and on our worth as humans.”

Six months ago, 22-year-old Kay launched the singles Feel Alright and Upside Down Town with her 10-piece band Liberté, scoring local commercial airplay, performances on Foxtel and airplay in New York, Tokyo, Rio, Berlin, York (UK), South Carolina and South Africa, as well as the eastern states.

Inspired by The Browhorn Orchestra, Lorde, Regina Spektor and Kate Miller-Heidke, the band’s sound is a mix of funk, pop and indie music.

“Following the launch, we have managed to acquire more gigs, as well as national and international contacts that have helped us to gain more momentum during this stage of our career,” Kay said.

“I have been writing a lot and we will soon be recording our next single and EP, which will aim to bring about more awareness about internal issues that impact the world around us.

“We’re also looking at gaining more local gigs and hopefully planning a tour to the east coast in 2018.”

Kay said the Ellington gig was an opportunity to share the band’s recent work with fans, alongside old favourites.

“Hopefully, that will help give us some perspective on which songs everyone would like to hear us record on an album,” she said.

“There will be some exciting new work we’ve been collaborating on, as well as refreshed versions of older tunes we’ve been playing for a while.”
