Hailing from Sydney’s south west suburbs, MC Rates is by no means a stranger to the Australian hip-hop scene. Having started playing music as a guitarist in bands throughout Sydney, he then made the transition to writing rhymes at age 17, influenced by the likes of Scarface, Eminem, Big Pun and Wu tang Clan, as well as drawing inspiration from life experiences and his local surroundings.

Rates established himself in the Australian battle scene, competing at multiple battle events across the country before going on to tour the nation 9 times over with his brother/ long-time collaborator and ABK Records CEO, Kerser. Having played sold out shows and festivals among the likes of Big Day Out, Sprung, Breath of Life, and Heatwave, Rates began to amass a solid fan base driven by the consistent release of promotional tracks and videos, the most successful of which has been his ‘Nightmare’ series, exceeding 1 million Youtube views, as did ‘Nightmare’ 2 and 3.

June 2013 saw the release of Rates’s much anticipated debut album ’Destroy and Rebuild’ which spent a week on top of the Australian iTunes charts. Rates then went on to tour the album at many venues across the country for the next 2 years, whilst beginning work on his next musically progressive release ‘Untold’. In May 2016 Rates released his second album ‘Untold’ through ABK Records/Warner, which also had huge success and once again sat at the top of the Australian iTunes hip hop charts and this time even charted at no.4 on the Aria all genre charts, a huge feat for an independent artist.

Rates is a true artist of his generation and his live performance is definitely evidence of this, let alone his writing and recording abilities—Rates is refreshing, motivating and healing for the ears and soul, a unique trait, in a somewhat stagnant yet overcrowded music market.

Known for his explosive live shows, and raw—heartfelt vocal delivery, which many across the country have witnessed—and are saying “the best in Australia”.

Be sure to catch Rates live performance in 2017.
