What sort of music would Schubert write if he were alive today? That is the question raised by Australian composer Matthew Hindson in The Rave and the Nightingale, a work that incorporates Schubert’s String Quartet No 15 – performed here by the acclaimed Australian String Quartet – with original music by Hindson. Given Schubert’s skills as a songwriter, Hindson wonders whether 21st-century Schubert would find inspiration in today’s popular genres.

The play Rosamunde enjoyed a very short life in the theatre but Schubert’s charming incidental music – written in the space of only a few days – has long been the composer’s most enduring music for the stage. Much larger in scope is Bruckner’s magisterial Symphony No 6. Bruckner was in awe of Beethoven and devoted to Wagner and combines in his music the grandeur of the former and the rapture of the latter.
