Darebin Arts Speakeasy present a Fabricated Rooms production, as a part of the 2017 Melbourne Fringe Festival.

The Sky Is Well Designed
Written and Directed by Patrick McCarthy

Two scientists venture out into the desert to play music to the earth's dying atmosphere. A work of quiet conversations and stunning sound, Fabricated Rooms bring you their highly anticipated second production, The Sky Is Well Designed.

The work tells the story of two researchers, Bear and Thomas, and is inspired by the coining of the term Petrichor; the word used to describe the scent that remains in the air after rainfall. Using this image as its foundation, The Sky Is Well Designed centres around these two scientists in the vast Australian landscape as they undertake a study examining the musical qualities of electromagnetic energy. Drawing on the rich history of crossover in the studies of electromagnetic energy and music composition, The Sky In Well Designed transports audiences to a fleeting moment where humans attempt to speak with the natural environment as it decays around them.

Nominated for four Green Room Awards with their debut season in 2015, this latest work explores the ways in which our relationship to transience and nature is shifting amidst the dual forces of digital existence, and climate change. A collaboration between writer-director Patrick McCarthy and composer Robert Jordan, The Sky Is Well Designed offers Melbourne audiences an intimate, hyper-realist performance coupled with an original live electronic score.

Fabricated Rooms is a contemporary theatre company based in Melbourne, operating at the meeting point of experimental new writing and innovative theatrical forms. They combine rigorously developed original texts with alternative devising and design methodologies, creating works that generate space for quiet contemplation and subtle transformation. Bringing together some of Melbourne’s finest actors and designers, Fabricated Rooms aims to foster a creative environment of ongoing collaboration and experimentation.
