Ever since gold strike in 1854, Melbourne has been Australia's capital for pleasure. Chief past time for Melbournians has always been live theatre, with plays, cabaret, comedy and burlesque being staple performances in Melbourne for nearly 150 years. Yet it is the genre of vaudeville that Melbourne has always produced like no other city or town in the country with more vaudeville theatres than any other state since its first pub back-rooms began presenting variety programs in the 1830's.

The Melbourne Vaudeville Walking Tour is an interactive tour presented by Melbourne stand up comedian Gabe Frances that takes you on a fascinating journey down the golden-mile of elaborate and ornate theatres that once stood along Melbourne's most prestigious street.

Starting at Parliament House on Spring St, the tour leads down Bourke St past a dozen locations where theatres once stood, or remains of their former structures can still be seen. The tour then proceeds along Bourke St with a short trip on a tram, Turing left at King St, and ending at Australia's last dedicated vaudeville theatre Speakeasy HQ - Apollo Theatre. As the last part of your tour you will be treated to a live vaudeville performance that will feature a number of short acts, including the likes of Circus artists, comedians, musicians and more.
