From either side of the Tasman comes a concert of two choirs that is sure to deliver, just like any match up of teams from across the ditch. The touring Wanganui Male Choir joins our local Tasmanian Song Company, to present a friendly choral contest of choirs.

The Wanganui Male Choir is the second oldest performing choir in New Zealand and brings 119 years of performing in more than 265 concerts to share with a Tassie audience. Performing just once in Tasmania during their tour of south-eastern states of Australia, the Wanganui Male Choir are travelling with their new Musical Director Margaret Thompson and new accompanist Caitlin Arthur.

Tasmanian Song Company President, Maree Richards said the choir has been planning and practicing for this combined concert since September last year.

“We are thrilled with the contrast of songs in the program and we are especially excited to be uniting with a male choir! The sound of male voices rising in song is very stirring indeed, add to that the combined Soprano Mezzo Alto Tenor and Bass voices of Tasmanian Song Company and it becomes an event not to be missed,” Maree said.

Musical Director Matthew Ives is thrilled with the choir’s recent foray onto stage as a community choir in the dramatic play The Events.

“The choir has performed in several successful concerts this year, and we are excited to have Hamish Houston back on stage with us playing bass. Performing with bass adds more colour and variety to the choir’s sound, and I can’t help but play a little drums when Hamish Houston is on the bass and Tom Misson is playing keys,” Matthew said.

Tickets available on TryBooking and include light refreshments at interval, with wine available for purchase. If you don’t have online access, please call Choir President, Maree on 0417 347 044 to get tickets by special arrangement.
