On 29 January 1998 Maitland Gaol closed its gates to prisoners for the last time, since then it has become one of the most unique and recognisable tourist facilitates in the Hunter Region.

To commemorate the Gaol’s closure, a series of activities will be held onsite between December 2017 and February 2018. These include exhibitions, interpretive displays, summer school holiday program, and Open Day and official commemoration.

The gates of Maitland Gaol are being unlocked for the day. Offering guests entry to the site for a gold coin donation. There will be a range of activities on offer including children’s activities, prisoner exercise routine, shoot the hoop competition, food trucks, garden talks, access to usually restricted areas and exhibitions.
