ANZAC Cottage, built by the community in one day on February 12, 1916, is thought to be the first war memorial to those who gave their lives at Gallipoli built in Western Australia. A practical memorial, ANZAC Cottage was also built as a home for a returned wounded soldier who was wounded on the 25 April 1915. Each year, the Friends of ANZAC Cottage honour these humble beginnings with a Sunset Service on ANZAC Day beginning at 5:15pm. Other activities at the Cottage on this significant day include a free wreath making workshop for children beginning at 4pm, talks on the Cottage’s history at 3:30pm and 4:30pm, and the installation of the “Field of Remembrance”.

The Cottage, situated at 38 Kalgoorlie St, Mt Hawthorn, will be open from 3pm to 6pm with free entry and afternoon tea for a gold coin donation. All are welcome and bookings are not necessary. Enquiries can be directed to Anne Chapple at or on 0411 44 55 82.
