Have you ever seen an artist create a sculpture with a chainsaw? And create an entire sculpture from a single piece of wood in just 5 days?

Well the annual Australian Chainsaw Carving Championships proudly sponsored by STIHL, are on again in January, and it’s your opportunity to come and see 10 of the world’s best chainsaw carvers compete up at SkyHigh Mount Dandenong, just an hour’s drive from Melbourne.

Come and watch in amazement as male and female entrants from Australia, Canada, USA, and Japan compete for this year’s cash prize.

The theme for this competition is ‘The Garden’, and over five days the competitors will carefully hone their own unique design into a sculpture using three different saws provided by event sponsor STIHL. On the sixth and final day of the event, the carvers spend the morning speedcarving, after which their sculptures are available to buy and the winners of the competition are announced.

Last year’s winner Rob Bast, is a self-taught carver from Wandin, near SkyHigh in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, so this is a local competition for him, given that he competes all over the world. He is looking forward to carving again at SkyHigh, and pitting his talent against some of the world’s best.

This is a great family event held during school holidays, as there are plenty of attractions for the kids to enjoy at SkyHigh, including a hedge maze, lawns to play on, plus BBQs on site as well as two cafes and a bistro for a bite to eat. And for a bit of make-believe—there’s Igor the Giant’s Chair and Percy the Possum’s House to enjoy too. A gate fee per car applies, and the Chainsaw Carving Competition is a free event for everyone to marvel at.

For full details, go to SkyHigh Mount Dandenong website.

Winners announced at 1:30pm on Sunday 21st January, 2018.
