A moving documentary about wild boys and the dogs that tame them, Backtrack Boys screens for one weekend only at select Perth cinemas.

Featuring the rough talking, rule breaking jackaroo, Bernie Shakeshaft, the documentary provides a glimpse into the youth program called Backtrack which he runs from a shed on the outskirts of Armidale, NSW.

The observational documentary follows Zach, Alfie and Rusty on the road with Bernie’s legendary dog jumping in on the team as they travel to rural shows across NSW. The dog shows started out as a way to teach kids self-discipline, calm their emotions, build trust and boost their communication skills—but now they have become the world record holders.

Universal themes play out as these young boys strive to pull their lives together; with their personal survival and futures at stake. Whilst on the road, the boys camp around the fire and sleep under the stars but the trauma from their past is never too far away.

“I hope this film will foster a greater understanding of the issues these kids face and inspire communities to develop real alternatives that will help keep them out of jail,” says director Catherine Scott.

The documentary explores Bernie’s philosophy in action and through the journey of the boys in his care. After ten years and a crime rate that has halved, the entire community of Armidale is now fully behind Bernie’s Backtrack program. It’s a shining example of what happens when all stakeholders in the community join together to tackle complex issues.

Filmed over a year, this inspiring story reveals the challenges these young people face as they try to find their place in the world—all with the help of Bernie and his trusted dogs in tow.
