Discover the inner-workings of a honeybee hive.

An exciting unique and educational experience unlike anything you've done before. For anyone interested in these fascinating, life-supporting insects. Daniel BeeShepherd of the Castlemaine Bee Sanctuary offers an apiarist’s adventure. On the first and third Sunday of each month from 1–3pm, he takes people on an educational “Honeybee Hive Tour”.

Donning provided bee suits, participants will discover the art of bee-centred beekeeping and—weather permitting—take a look inside a working beehive to see its inner secrets. Learn about the different properties and uses of uncontaminated, hand-pressed, hyper-local and hive-conditioned honey (did you know it can reduce hayfever symptoms for locals?); and how to help bees at home.

The Beehive Tours are designed for gardeners, nature enthusiasts, adventurers, foodies and also anyone who wants to learn more about bees but doesn’t necessarily want to become beekeepers themselves. Participants may be inspired to go on to learn beekeeping or to keep a hive, but this tour is not a beekeeping class.

Everyone will take home a 250 g jar of local Castlemaine honey and a wealth of knowledge about bees and all they do. Bee suits and gloves will be provided, but participants should wear closed-toe shoes that cover the ankles. Gumboots are ideal. Please note: at this stage, only adults can be accommodated.
