Sydney Road Gallery presents ‘Honour The Being’ solo exhibition by artist Jaimee Paul. Opening Night will be on Saturday, 21 July 2018 3pm–6pm.

‘Honour The Being’, is a collection of animal portrait paintings which depicts an interaction the artist has had with the animals. Some were admired from afar, while others convey a close emotional bond of companionship.

“No matter how connected you are to animals in your life, there are those moments that take your breath away, that you hold on to forever. This series is a documentation of those memories that took my breath away,” said Ms Paul.

“I found inspiration in the souls that hid behind the eyes that met mine once upon a time. They remind me of what’s important and what’s worth protecting in our fragile world.”

Jaimee Paul creates ‘art for purpose’ to spread positive awareness of animals to her audience. Through her work she aims to forge an emotional connection that she believes only art has the power to achieve.

This exhibition’s purpose is to honour the moments and beings that have helped her cement her love for the environment sought out by travel, a physical eye to eye connection, then captured by her camera lens, lastly, translated with a paintbrush.

The hero piece is a life-sized portrait of a White Rhino which Jaimee had seen at a Taronga Western Plains Zoo recently. “Visiting Western Plains Zoo recently I sat with the White Rhinos for over an hour, where I felt a huge connection and experienced ecological grief. I knew then I had to honour them in a painting and the only way to highlight their powerful presence was to go full life size. Having painted the Northern White Rhino back in 2015 when there was 5 remaining, now being only 2 left, I wanted to respect them but also highlight its close relation as a sign of hope. That we still have the power to not repeat history.”

Profits from one of her ocean themed paintings will go to Operation Straw, a project which empowers individuals and businesses in the local community to reduce the amount of single-use plastic they use.
