The Kapa Haka Extravaganza festival will feature special guests Whangara Mai Tawhiti live and direct from Aotearoa NZ.
Whangara Mai Tawhiti are Te Matatini 2017 reigning kapa haka champions, they are the best of the best at the pinnacle of Haka and will headline this event for Kapa Haka Australia. Proceeds raised from this festival is to help assist 2 kapa haka teams travelling to Wellington NZ to compete at Te Matatini 2019 and the Australian National Kapa Haka Festival Organization. The 2 kapa haka teams travelling next year are based in Sydney and Perth however when they hit the stage next year in Aotearoa/NZ they’re ultimately representing Maori living in Oz.
We support both teams for their journey back to the homeland and know they will do us all proud. We are especially grateful to Whangara Mai Tawhiti and Te Matatini Society Incorporated for endorsing this kaupapa and for helping to promote Kapa Haka and Maori culture in Australia. We welcome all people to come along to the festival and enjoy a taste of Aotearoa and at the same time helping to support the kaupapa. Nau Mai Haere Mai.
Te Kapa Haka o Whāngārā Mai Tawhiti.
Whāngārā-Mai-Tawhiti was first established in 1961, and then revived in 1976. The group as we know it today, was formed in 1995, following requests from local Whāngārā elders who wished to keep the customs and traditions of Ngāti Konohi alive. Under the tutelage of renowned Māori culture exponent, Derek Lardelli, Whāngārā have cemented their presence at national level over the years.
