This daytime or evening pottery class is for new and continuing students who would like use the pottery wheel to make functional pottery and ceramics. Functional ceramics refers to object you may use everyday, for special occasions or as decoration. Objects include plates, vases, cups, bowls, jugs, saucers etc. New students with no prior ceramic experience are welcome and encouraged to attend. New students will learn and practise the fundamentals of pottery wheel throwing: preparing clay, centering clay on the wheel, turning or trimming. Continuing students or those with experience elsewhere will build on their skills, work on problem areas, learn new techniques and begin to develop their own projects based on their particular interests. All students will be introduced to a range of decorative techniques for their objects, learn about glazing and finishing.

Our ceramics studio is equipped with 8 wheels. Clay can be purchased at the workshop, a limited number of glazes are available and work is kiln fired on the premises. There is a maximum of 8 students in this class.
Students will work on projects, building their skills and confidence from week to week.

Tutor Shinhee Ma specialises in wheel thrown contemporary sculptural wares that are playful and functional for everyday use.

Beginners will learn and practise fundamental skills: preparing clay, centering and trimming, building confidence and skills week by week.
Continuing students build on existing skills, develop new skills and develop their own projects.
Students can expect to have several completed objects at the end of the term.

Maximum of 8 students.
