Have you ever wanted to try pottery wheel throwing? This 3-part beginner package is for you. No experience required and all materials are included in the fees.

This is a 3-part package for beginners to learn the basic principles of pottery wheel throwing. The package of classes occur over three consecutive weeks to allow enough time for your work to dry and be fired. Once you have finished the 3 sessions you will have several completed vessels.

Session 1 (3 hours) | In this session students are introduced to the 3 principle steps of making ceramics on a pottery wheel: Preparing your clay, Centering your clay, Shaping your clay. You will learn through demonstration and hands on practise throwing simple cylinders.

Session 2 (2 hours) | You will return a week later for session 2, where you wil learn how to Trim and Turn the vessels you made in session 1. Your tutor can also show you some basic decorating techniques. After this session, we will fire your work in our kiln.

Session 3 (1 hour) | You return a week later for session 3, where you will glaze your fired vessels. We will let you know once your work is glaze fired and ready for collection (approximately 2 weeks later).

The cost includes all your clay, firing your vessels and basic glazes.

What should I wear?
Wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes you are relaxed about getting clay on. We suggest comfortable pants/trousers as you’ll sit close to the wheel as you throw. Please ensure long hair is tied back, you take off jewellery and watches and remove any long necklaces, scarves etc from around your neck

What should I bring?
A sponge. Bring an apron and also an old towel (old bath towell or large hand towel).

Art Est. offers a boutique learning experience for adults, teens and children. Located in a spacious, light-filled heritage warehouse, with four dedicated teaching studios, an art gallery and a new ceramics studio. Our class sizes are kept to only 10–12 students (8 for wheel throwing pottery), ensuring each student receives the individual tuition they need.

Art classes for adults are available weekdays, evenings and Saturday mornings. We also have a great range of single day weekend art workshops available, a perfect option for visitors to Sydney looking for things to do, or for someone who doesn’t have time to commit to a term class. Kids and Teens can build their creative skills at our after school and Saturday term classes as well as our school holiday workshops each and every holiday.
