The School of Practical Philosophy is a not-for-profit, volunteer organisation. First of all the primary aim of the School is freedom. The sort of practical freedom which allows a person to simply be themselves, with the confidence that comes from complete self-knowledge.

The secondary aim of the School depends on the first aim. With the confidence that comes from self-knowledge, individuals use their talents to uplift the communities in which they live. As a result, their horizons become broader, their world larger, their sense of themselves more universal. These aims are fulfilled through two kinds of work: work with and on one’s own self; and work with and for others.

Mindful Wisdom and the courses which follow provide the knowledge and the tools for these two kinds of work, in a step-by-step, systematic and inspiring way. The introductory course, Mindful Wisdom, rouses the memory that wisdom is within and seeks to draw out the memory. The course looks at life and its meaning, the world and its causes. It asks, what holds us back? What sets us free? Based on the classic philosophies of East and West, it invites students to see life as a place to test the words of the wise.

The School operates over a 12 week term with a mid-term break at week 7. Courses consist of 11 sessions of 2.5hrs each and include a break for refreshment. Included in the course fee is a complimentary half day weekend workshop to explore and put into practice concepts introduced in these classes.
