The Town of Bassendean and Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service are proud to announce the return of NAIDOC Family Day.

NAIDOC Family Day is an entirely free event that celebrates Aboriginal language, culture and art and promotes the invaluable contribution Aboriginal Australians have made to our community. This year’s National NAIDOC week theme, “Because of her, we can”, will shine a spotlight on the many courageous, resilient and influential Indigenous women who have inspired and contributed greatly to their community. In lieu of this year’s theme, The Town of Bassendean are excited to have teamed up with a number of innovative and inspiring indigenous women for our NAIDOC Family Day line-up.

Bassendean resident Trudy Snow, who was recently crowned Miss Kwobordok (Beautiful in Noongar) at the Miss NAIDOC ceremony will be serving as MC for the day, while Indigenous models will be taking to the stage in an exclusive runway show presented by husband and wife duo Peter and Miranda Farmer. The highly anticipated runway show, will feature works by Peter Farmer including his recent shoe collaboration with International Designer Jimmy Choo. Their ground-breaking collaboration resulted in the World’s first couture Aboriginal shoes. The Farmers are no strangers to the runways having previously worked on last year’s Telstra Perth Fashion Festival and Malaysia Fashion Week. Acclaimed Noongar Artist Sharyn Egan will also be on hand running a Fabulous Creatures weaving workshop.

The 2018 program will include the annual Dandjoo Koorliny Reconciliation walk, 110.9fm Noongar Radio will be broadcasting live from Ashfield Reserve and there will be a number of kids activities in the Youth Zone including virtual reality, urban art demos and much more, plus a sports zone featuring Swan Districts Football Club.
