Artists concerned for the welfare of all animals show cruelty free art works. (Non) punters are invited to a celebratory event that provides a ‘sweepstake free’ alternative to the Melbourne Cup.

Cruelty to animals in various contexts has attracted impassioned responses from many quarters. Disclosures of unethical practices in dog and horse racing and the inhumane treatment of livestock have generated outrage and disquiet, and it is from this platform that a group of concerned contemporary artists open a dialogue around these issues.

Animals have shared our battles, clothed and fed us, protected and comforted us. The measure of our relationship with animals, as pets, workers, protectors or ‘utilitarian’ entities, is contingent upon how we choose to treat them. By and large, our management and care of animals is something of a testament to our ethical disposition and the compassion we demonstrate as a fellow species. Cruel exploitation of animals in any context is anathema to most and it attracts vigorous reproach from the community and the authorities.
