Sky High spectacle is set to officially open 2018 World Parachuting Championships.

The sky above Surfers Paradise will be brimming with colour and an air of excitement on Saturday, October 6, as 25 flag-bearing skydivers from competing nations officially welcome the 2018 World Parachuting Championships.

Hosted by the Australian Parachuting Federation (APF), families and skydiving enthusiasts are invited to join in the fun and fanfare of the Opening Ceremony, set to thrill and excite spectators. The public spectacle is a prelude to the week-long competition at Sports Super Centre, Gold Coast, where spectators are invited to witness the adrenaline-charged competition.

Australian Parachuting Federation CEO Brad Turner said the Opening Ceremony event is a great opportunity for the Gold Coast community to enjoy a free, family-friendly day out, and to support an international sporting event taking place on their home soil.

“The event will give Gold Coasters a rare opportunity to witness the official opening of an international sporting event on the iconic sands of Surfers Paradise,” said Mr Turner.

“We encourage everyone to join us at the free Opening Ceremony to witness the very best skydivers from around the world perform an aerial spectacle set to fill the Gold Coast sky with colour and adrenaline-charged excitement.”

Proceedings kick off at 2pm with hundreds of skydivers parading through the streets of Surfers Paradise as they make their way to the foreshore. Decked out in their official uniforms, complete with lanyards and their national flags, the international athletes will march through Surfers Paradise as locals line the streets to extend a warm welcome.

Once at the Surfers Paradise foreshore, athletes will be greeted by a Nipper representing Surf Life Saving Australia and be presented with a beach towel, a symbolic welcome gift from the host country.

Spectators will then be directed to look to the sky above as the big blue is scattered with a kaleidoscope of colours as 25 skydivers descend on Surfers Paradise beach with their country flag proudly flying in the sea breeze.

The landing of the skydivers signifies the commencement of the official component of the ceremony, with a Welcome to Country delivered by Uncle Allan Lena and addresses from Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate and Meaghan Scanlon MP. The Championships will then officially be declared open by IPC President Ms Gillian Rayner.

A total of 10 skydiving and parachuting disciplines will be judged over the seven-day event, covering many forms of competitive skydiving, including Formation Skydiving, Vertical Formation Skydiving, Canopy Formation, Artistic Events, and Speed Skydiving—the latter debuting as an Australian test event in 2017, where skydivers will reach speeds above 600 km/h.

The World Championships are held every two years with the event last hosted in Australia in 1999. The prestigious event has previously been held in Chicago, the Czech Republic, and Dubai in recent years.

Families visiting the event are encouraged to catch the G: Link into Surfers Paradise for an early lunch at one of the precinct’s many cafes and restaurants before the event commences. The 2018 World Parachuting Championships on the Gold Coast are supported by major partners City of Gold Coast and Super Sports Centre, Gold Coast.
