The annual Parrtjima – A Festival in Light event returns.

Now in its third year, the festival has become a much-anticipated celebration of the Aboriginal Art of Central Australia. Parrtjima is the only authentic Indigenous light festival of its kind and proudly showcases the oldest continuous culture on earth through the newest technology.

At Parrtjima, visitors will be able to gain new perspectives and experience the many layers of first peoples culture as they become immersed in the language and storytelling that makes the desert country something fundamentally unique to the world.

Under the artistic direction of Rhoda Roberts AO, who returns to curate the event for a second year, this year’s theme is ‘Cultural Freedom’, which celebrates the ways Aboriginal artists’ practices have evolved through new styles and materials, while remaining true to the ancient philosophy of connection and country.

Continuously evolving, Parrtjima this year introduces five site-specific installations that will immerse visitors in Desert Park’s unique Red Centre landscape. For the first time, this year’s festival will also launch a dedicated children’s space, an immersive space to engage and incite their curiosity.

A dynamic public program of activities will also be on offer, allowing visitors to participate in a series of talks and an opportunity to hear from participating artists, to gain a deeper understanding of first peoples’ culture.

In 2019 Parrtjima returns for a fourth consecutive year, moving from its original September timing to an earlier schedule in April (5–14 April 2019).
