Pottery Wheel Throwing for Beginners – Two-Day Workshop

If you’ve always wanted to have a go at the pottery wheel, then this is introductory workshop is for you. In this two day workshop you will learn and practice the basics and you’re sure to get hooked! This session is suitable for absolute beginners or those who have a little previous experience and would like to practice under the guidance of a tutor.

What to expect:

Day 1

- watch demonstrations by your tutor who will show you step by step what to do
- learn how to prepare your clay (wedging)
- practise the fundamental techniques of wheel throwing including: centering and shaping
- practise throwing simple cylindrical objects (pots, bowls, vessels)

Day 2

- learn and practice trimming your thrown vessels
- be introduced to a range of basic hand surface decorating techniques (for example sgraffito, rolled decoration)

1 or 2 objects (size dependent) will be bisque fired. Bisque firing will occur during the week and work can be collected on Sunday 14 January where you may choose to glaze your vessels and have them fired (this is also included in the workshop fee).

Included in the course fee:
- 1 bag of clay. Additional clay may be purchased at $5 per 2kg (or $20 a 10kg bag).
- You will be able to use our pottery tools during the workshop, or you if you already have a set bring what you have.
- 1 or 2 objects (size dependent) will be bisque fired. Bisque firing will occur during the week and work can be collected on Sunday 14 January where you may choose to glaze your vessels and have them fired (this is also included in the workshop fee).

Art Est. offers a boutique learning experience for adults, teens and children. Located in a spacious, light-filled heritage warehouse, with four dedicated teaching studios, an art gallery and a new ceramics studio. Our class sizes are kept to only 10–12 students (8 for wheel throwing pottery), ensuring each student receives the individual tuition they need.

Art classes for adults are available weekdays, evenings and Saturday mornings. We also have a great range of single day weekend art workshops available, a perfect option for visitors to Sydney looking for things to do, or for someone who doesn’t have time to commit to a term class.

Kids and Teens can build their creative skills at our after school and Saturday term classes as well as our school holiday workshops each and every holiday.
