Join us for an informative afternoon with Tom Kendall from Kendall Permaculture + Jed Long from Cave Urban as they present their design approaches and international projects. Get rare insights into the work of these two innovative Australian design teams whose approaches consider the aesthetic, functional, economic and socio-political dimensions of the design object and process. The talks will be accompanied by rich visuals and opportunities for discussion.

3–4:30pm: Tom Kendall

Tom Kendall from Kendal Permaculture and Permaculture Sustainable Consulting is a permaculture farmer with a lifelong broad acre agricultural background. He is co-founder of the PRI Sunshine Coast Inc and PRI Luganville, Vanuatu and runs PDC courses and Permaculture training on his Permaculture Demonstration Site “Maungaraeeda”. Tom regularly co-teaches Permaculture Design Certificate courses with Geoff Lawton and has taught Permaculture courses in Australia and overseas. He is part of Geoff Lawton’s Permaculture Sustainable Consulting team and does regular consultations for personal land holders as well as not for profit organisations and government departments in Australia and overseas.

Tom has worked and consulted in sub-tropical and tropical climates (pacific and Caribbean islands, north east Australia etc) and dry land climates (Jordan, Western Australia etc). He has a talent to identify and repair damaged and eroded landscapes, focusing on soil health and transforming damaged land to highly productive land. He is able to improve land on a low budget with minimum outside inputs, and can design the landscape so it will produce an income.

4:30–4:45pm: Break

4:45pm–6:15pm: Jed Long

Jed Long is co-founder of Cave Urban. He studied Architecture and developed his passion for sustainable design through a series of workshops and cross-cultural exchanges in Thailand, China, Japan and Portugal. Jed likes to empower and inspire others to step beyond conventional architectural ideas.

Cave Urban are an international collective formed to investigate vernacular lightweight structures and their relevance to contemporary design. This research developed into a practice that explores the intersection between art and architecture through the use of bamboo. Projects involve the participation of the local community, universities and artists. They foster cross cultural exchange and collaboration with international artists like Wang Wen-Chih (Taiwan), Georges Cuvillier (Belgium), Amir Rabik (Indonesia), Carolina Pinto (Chile) and Markus Tatton (Australia).

This Waverley Makers Craft + Design Talk is presented as part of the Sydney Design Festival 2018. The Makers Craft + Design Program is run by Waverley Council. The program builds creative capability and connection in the community through a broad range of mediums arising from a design approach including digital, traditional and contemporary crafts. Participants share skills, solve problems for good causes, for the love of innovating and to build well-being.
