Music and literature have gone hand in hand through the ages. Arcadia Winds and Phillip Sametz bring you 'Once upon a time signature...', a concert that showcases both sides of this relationship. Come along and hear music from across the world, played in conjunction with readings and songs from the texts that inspired it.

Charles Perrault was the father of the French fairy tale; fellow countryman Maurice Ravel’s impressionist depiction of several of Perrault’s stories offer vivid and colourful musical expeditions through these magical, dark and grim tales. Craig Silvey’s dramatic coming of age story Jasper Jones serves as the inspiration for Australian composer Paul Dean, as he weaves this narrative through his high-octane, emotional and often bleak work, Jasper and Charlie. And tying these two disparate pieces together are Malcolm Arnold’s Three Shanties, inspired by bawdy old English songs of the sea.

About Arcadia Winds

Arcadia Winds are trailblazers for Australian wind music. Awarded a fellowship at the Australian National Academy of Music upon their formation in late 2013, they became Musica Viva Australia's inaugural FutureMakers musicians from 2015–17. They have brought their brand of energetic, joyful and spontaneous performance to festival stages in almost every state and territory in the country, as well as concert halls across mainland China, and to listeners around the world through broadcasts of the BBC Proms Australia chamber music series. They have also reveled in musical partnerships with internationally renowned performers including the Australian String Quartet, piano virtuosi Lambert Orkis, Paavali Jumppanen and Anna Goldsworthy, and woodwind masters Ole Kristian Dahl and Thorsten Johanns.

"Captivating from the moment they took to the stage. Playing with great gusto and passion, these five uber talented musicians...stole the hearts of everyone in the crowd.” - The Adelaide Review

"A festival highlight, bursting with sonic potential.” - The Sydney Morning Herald

"The exacting individual skills and telepathic understanding between the five musicians created a breathtaking performance.” - CutCommon
