Baggage Handler Album Launch

The album Baggage Handler is the outcome of a unique collaboration between musician Dom Mariani and artist Jon Tarry. Recorded at Killerwatt Studios in 2017/18 it is a shared intuitive exploration—of the moments between departure and arrival. Mariani and Tarry construct a sonic framework from the known and an unknown turbulent space. Each track creates a narrative where sound expands in the slip stream of shared memory. They are the ‘Baggage Handlers' in the journey.

Dom Mariani is a West Australian singer, songwriter and guitarist who is known for his work and as the founder of legendary 80’s garage rockers The Stems. He is a two times (WAM) West Australian Music Industry Association Hall of Fame inductee and has achieved national and international acclaim for his music, recording and releasing 16 albums including solo albums, The Stems, The Someloves, DM3, The Majestic Kelp and his current outfit Datura4.

Jon Tarry’s art practice has engaged with complex relationships between visual art, music and time-based media platforms. His performance works combine music, film and sculpture in gallery exhibitions and site specific installations as well as stages at international music and art festivals. Recent highlights include: “Dark Mirror White Noise” at the 2016 Perth International Arts Festival, Western Australia, “Processing Sound” at the Loft Kluge Redwood Studio in Los Angeles and “Interventions” at MDW, St Elmo Fort, Valletta. Jon has performed numerous solo shows as well as collaborated with musicians in the contemporary jazz and independent music scene.

The project came about through shared passion for musical exploration and sonic invention. Baggage Handler was formed following an extended improvised studio session. Dom and Jon felt a studio recording was essential. The artists each with their own legacy generates an interweaving sonically diverse spatial experience. Evocating narrative and non-narrative film scores, each track of Baggage Handler embodies memory of transition, gliding, free falling into dimensions of uncanny where imaginations are released. Titles include, Arrivals, Hold, Hanger18, Air and Missing.

The soundtrack album, Baggage Handler by Baggage Handler (Jon and Dom) will be released worldwide on multiple media platforms wide on 5 July. The outcome is a full production studio album, some (Jurassic Technology) CD and Vinyl limited editions plus online via iTunes, Apple Music and Spotify other direct downloads.

There is a film for each track, sepia, blur, psychedelic, handmade film plus code generated animations responding to each track.

Baggage Handler (Jon and Dom) will be joined by distinguished musicians for the launch on 9 August at The Backlot Perth.
