UK’s Bex Marshall is back in Oz after 9 years and is delighted to have Bonnie Kay (USA) & The Bonafides on the bill with her for a never been seen before night of international blues at Club Sapphire, Merimbula.

Head to our website to find out more. UK Bex Marshall’s guitar playing combines slide, blues rock with electric ragtime and roots pickin’. Her voice is a powerful melting pot of heartache and rock diva soul. European Blues Awards nominations—best solo acoustic artist 2015/16/17/18. Award recipient UK Blues Awards 2013 best female blues artist, best blues album. Born Devon, based London, the product of blueblooded gentry and Irish Romany families. As a child her musician uncles played and stood her on the table to sing. At 11 she was given a 1963 Gibson Hummingbird.

“There’s not many female players doin’ what I’m doin’. A mixture of ragtime, slide and bluegrass with loads of lead licks kickin’ in, so I’m playing two time signatures simultaneously. I have bass lines going on while my percussive beat is slappin’ the strings. Mentors include Memphis Minnie, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Janis Joplin.

Bex was guest Janis (‘Joplin’) with Big Brother and the Holding Company 2014, sang with Darby Slick as the voice of Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane) 2018. Bex has played major fests worldwide—including Europe, USA, Brazil, Russia, Oz.

Booker T said: "at last, a woman who plays guitar like a goddess, sings like an angel, writes like Dylan and smiles like the devil."

Bonnie Kay and the Bonafides—a tour de force of jazzy blues and roots. Take an acoustic guitar, add a crazy-cool horn section, a super-slick rhythm section, flavoured with some immensely talented soloists and some quirky songs with vocal harmonies too.

"...they easily fit into blues, jazz, Rhythm and blues, rockabilly and in as much, they truly entertain and are a must-see as a live band." - Cathy Vaughan Rockin’ Blues Radio Show

With a debut album in the top ten of the Australian Blues and Roots Charts & six months in the top twenty five, and have been performing at major festivals around the country. Here is a unique sort of soulful and sassy package of blues and roots: open it! Bonnie Kay, a contemporary American singer/songwriter from Philly (USA) uses acoustic, finger-picking, slide-guitar techniques to deliver her own red-hot, sexy sound.

Her Bonafide companions? Wayne Rigby saxophone and flute, Catherine Golden double bass, Davo Fester drums, Louise Porter trumpet and Illya Szwec electric guitar and you’ve got a Bonafide Band with a capital B. That, there, is the triple truth, Ruth!
