Celebrating 50 years of swing from Australia's Big Band king!
Long before Postmodern Jukebox put their retro arrangements over contemporary songs, trombonist Ed Wilson spent the 60s, 70s and 80s swinging, rocking and funking with jazz standards and pop songs. After earlier playing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the ABC Dance Band, Ed’s career exploded in 1969 via the iconic Daly–Wilson Big Band, Australia’s most successful Jazz Big Band.
The Daly-Wilson Big Band is an important part of Australian music history and leaves behind a legacy of over half a dozen albums and indelible memories of sensational live shows across the world. Back then it was albums with vocalists Marcia Hines, Kerrie Biddell and Ricky May and the nation’s very best big band players, and now there would hardly be a musician across the nation that hasn’t played charts penned by the master arranger himself.
Ed has worked with some of the biggest names in showbiz—Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr, Liza Minelli, Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett and Tom Jones to name a few. Ed was an integral member of the orchestras for major television shows including the Don Lane show, Geoff Harvey’s band at channel 9 and Tommy Tycho's band at channel 7... and is still one of the most sought after session trombonists in Australia.
This performance features custom arrangements by Ed Wilson for the Canberra Wind Symphony in this special celebration tour. Come and experience the mastery—both in writing and on trombone—of the man whose zest and creativity convinced publishers to put the band into a Cleo centrefold!
