This summer, the Convent is once again proud to present the not-to-be-missed Sensory Art Lab at the Convent’s c3 Contemporary Art Space.

Calling all children and families to join artists from Slow Art Collective in a creative takeover, as we transform the gallery and reimagine this public space in a brand new series of free, hands-on, participatory art activities.

Create new architectures with your child, using a special kit of materials to build a hive of cubbies and shape your own shelter. Get weaving on the glow-loom and help us create a magical glow-in-the-dark chamber, before taking aim in the skirmish-style, fishing-net world inspired by Japanese game Tamaire. Be mesmerised by the hypno-wall of art wheels, then take a swing in the giant-sized hammock.

Immerse yourself in the canvas of Slow Art Collective, taking inspiration from their creative practices relating to environmental sustainability, material ethics, DIY culture and collaboration. Add your own creative touch to the participatory exhibition space with recycled and repurposed materials.

The gallery will be reimagined through public participation daily. Each day is a blank canvas! Relax with your family in our expansive heritage gardens or chill out in the newly commissioned Bamboo Pavilion—a site-specific, large-scale, immersive outdoor installation on the gallery forecourt, built to house our summer series of Convent Kids programs. The pavilion will be brought to life with special performances and activities; follow the event on our Facebook page to hear what’s coming up!

This program is delivered by the Convent in partnership with the expert Slow Art Collective team, whose creative practices focus on environmental sustainability and collaboration. Come along as a family and have a creative adventure at the Convent alongside a team of wildly talented and friendly artists. With collaboration being intrinsic to all facets of their work, Slow Art Collective is currently helmed by Chaco Kato and Dylan Martorell who invite collaborators to join them for individual projects.

The free Sensory Art Lab will be held each day from 10am to 2pm, 7–20 January 2019—no bookings required. Sensory Art Lab is best suited to children aged 2–10. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
