About the film

Described as a reverse western, Dead Man follows the story of accountant William Blake (Johnny Depp) who is on the run after murdering a man. Mortally wounded, and on the run, Blake meets Nobody, a strange Native-American man, who prepares him for his journey into the spiritual world.

The film is filled with poetry and cultural references and has been compared to postmodern literary works such as Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian. With an all-star cast and a soundtrack written by Neil Young, it was suggested that the film was destined to succeed, however critics (and the audience) were split down the middle—with some loving the film and others all but hating it.

Trivia bite: Neil Young recorded the soundtrack for this film by improvising on his electric guitar while watching the rough edit, alone in his recording studio.
