Do you want to learn how to draw and paint as a hobby or even take your skill to a professional level? This is a less intensive and relaxed class suitable for hobbyists and those who would like to enjoy the experience of painting in a friendly environment.
Although it is a group class, each individual will be guided according to own needs and everyone follows own pace. The basic program is a combination from the traditional program to learn the basic skills of drawing plus other modifications and additions to teach you colour and painting. I teach representational art that is realism and impressionism. I do not teach abstract or any other forms of contemporary styles.
What you learn?
Absolute beginners are encouraged to start learning the basic concepts and techniques of drawing. Drawing is the foundation of visual art. Training will be focused to develop a keen eye to see and observe while develop the skill of handling line, contour, perspective and values to develop the form and a convincing representation of light. As you progress you will be introduced to painting starting from monochromatic (one colour) gradually adding more colour as you progress.
Training is from simple to complex. The pace at which we progress depends on the individual. The more you practice the quicker you progress. It is always advisable and suggested that you practice at home in order to improve your technique and move on at a faster pace.
What are the subjects you learn?
Students will be given subjects carefully selected by the tutor to tackle various problems and techniques.
As references we will be using:
Studio observation studies using still life props
Drawings/lithographs (Bargue drawings) and casts
Master copies
Photography
Advanced students will be allowed to choose own references.
Subjects covered include:
Still life
Human Figure
Portraiture
Landscape (intermediate and advanced students)
Training schedule:
Although there is a structure behind the training schedule, there are no time-frames and every person can move forward at own pace. This pace can be faster for those individuals that draw and paint regularly.
Training is sequential starting from line and mass drawing, perspective, light and shade (values), using graphite and later charcoal. From charcoal we move to monochromatic painting using oil paint. Introduction to oil painting and painting in full colour with extensive practice on colour mixing using colour studies.
Importance is given to the further improvement in drawing, while getting more experience in mixing colour, paint and brush handling, glazing, direct/indirect painting and edge control.
