Notre Dame University and the internationally-acclaimed National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) have joined forces to stage summer holiday classes in Fremantle for the first time.
In a unique collaboration, Notre Dame will be the venue for a series of performance classes on campus from January 5 to 13 next year, conducted by senior professionals from NIDA’s Sydney headquarters who will fly in for the ‘season’.
Australia’s leading centre for education and training in the performing arts, NIDA’s famous alumni include Cate Blanchett, Sam Worthington and Lord of the Rings star, Miranda Otto.
Notre Dame will host three separate classes—for students from grades 3 to 12—designed to give young people a taste of the courses offered at the Institute:
The 'NIDA Drama School' focuses on developing performance skills including improvisation, voice and movement, devising, acting and rehearsing scenes. A performance will be held at the end of the week where students showcase scenes to family and friends.
Monday 7–Friday 11 January, 10am–5pm – Grades 3–6 and 7–10
The 'NIDA Actors Project' allows students to experience the core principles of NIDA actor training, collaborating with a graduate from the NIDA Higher Education program to create voice, movement and devised performance projects. The course culminates in a presentation demonstrating all three areas to an invited audience including family and friends.
Monday 7–Friday 11 January, 10am–5pm – Grades 11–12
The ‘Screen Acting Boot Camp’ helps students to identify and experience the essentials of screen acting. Students build their on-screen confidence as they develop skills in improvisation, character development and script work. Live and recorded scenes are rehearsed and presented to family and friends at the end of the course.
Saturday 12–Sunday 13 January, 10am–5pm – Grades 3–6, 7–10 and 11–12
"The opportunity to work with Notre Dame to bring our classes into a key cultural hub in Western Australia marks an important milestone in our mission to make a significant contribution to the success and vibrancy of the Australian and international arts and entertainment industries," said Tricia Ryan, Head of NIDA Open.
"The fact that Notre Dame is widely recognised for its success in liberal arts higher education makes this an ideal opportunity for collaboration," she added.
Notre Dame’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Peter Tranter, said that the courses on offer will have far-reaching appeal.
"Our collaboration with NIDA reflects the University’s continuing commitment to the creative arts, and will throw a new spotlight on Fremantle’s West End as a centre for creative excellence. We look forward to the success of this first collaboration and to working with NIDA into the future," he said.
Fremantle City Council also welcomed the initiative.
"The association with NIDA will not only bring economic benefits to Fremantle. It will build on our city’s brand throughout the metro area and beyond as a destination for all things creative, said Luis Puig, Economic Development Coordinator
"In addition, by utilising the university’s facilities, NIDA will help maximise the use of the town's best preserved heritage buildings. It is the perfect way to bring our historic buildings to life," he added
As part of the collaboration, Notre Dame and NIDA will also offer courses for younger students on the University's Sydney Campus from February to December.
