Welcome to the world of weaving! This beginner weaving class will have you settling into the meditative motions of creating handwoven textiles and achieve your very own contemporary handwoven wall hanging. This workshop is for lovers of all different styles—whether you love crazy bold colours, textures, muted tones, or geometric shapes, you can create a woven tapestry perfect for your home.

Your weaving guide Shawnee Dean, of Shawnee Made & Found, has years of experience and knowledge in hand-weaving techniques. She will share with you her passion for loom weaving, as well as insight into her design and artistic process. Shawnee draws inspiration from organic shapes and natural, earthy colours. She often incorporates recycled, natural and hand-dyed materials into her work.

Loom weaving, as far as we can tell, has been around for over 7000 years! In this workshop you will learn the skills and basic techniques of weaving using a traditional manual loom. You will be encouraged to embark on your own creative process, making a handwoven wall hanging that echoes your personal style and tastes.

What is provided:
Weaving loom, from Shawnee Made & Found, yours to keep and take home
Weaving tools, tapestry needle, shuttle stick and a weaving comb, also yours to keep
Yarn and fibre used for weaving
Wooden dowel for mounting work
Instructional sheet by Shawnee, with illustrations and useful web links
Light refreshments

What to bring:
Optional: bring a piece of driftwood, relatively straight and even width, at least 38cm long, this can be used to mount your wall hanging rather than the wooden dowel provided.
Please wear closed shoes

Experience level of participants:
Beginner level. Participants will be learning with the assumption that they have no prior experience.
