To celebrate the $1.2m renovation of their state-of-the-art funeral home, local funeral operators Turnbull and White Lady Funerals North Hobart will hold children’s donation drive benefitting the Smith Family Foundation.

The Hobart funeral home team will collect new books, toys with batteries (if required), and board games from 1st October through to 6th December at their 71 Letitia Street Hobart, Tasmania location. These will then be distributed to local children in need at Christmas.

The charity drive comes after a long history of supporting the local community. Established in 1976, Turnbull Funerals has been operating from the iconic building at 71 Letitia Street for over 40 years, and, together with White Lady Funerals, have undertaken a million-dollar transformation to bring a modern aesthetic to the building’s unique heritage.

Like Turnbull, the building itself has a long-standing history with the community, having originally been built and opened as Hobart State High School in 1917. This redevelopment, which began in the second quarter of 2018, was carefully designed to retain the building’s classic features, such as the original school signage, whilst refreshing and modernising the interiors and services provided by both local businesses.

From a traditional service with Turnbull, to a specialist funeral with the all-female team at White Lady, the new facility provides options to suit individual preferences. The upgrade includes a grand main chapel seating 250, a more intimate family chapel with a 50-person seating capacity, a reflection lounge as well as catering facilities. The revamped venue now benefits from high-tech features like state-of-the-art audio-visual technology that can live-stream funerals online to well-wishers around the world.

The Christmas toy and book donation drive will assist the Smith Family Foundation, an independent charity focused on helping disadvantaged Australian children.

“We are re-launching our beautiful location to better serve the community, so it’s important to us that we use this opportunity to give back to the people of Hobart. We encourage everyone to join us in supporting this wonderful cause, as well as visit the new facilities, which is also available for community gathering usage,” Hobart Area Manager, Andy Brown says.

“We are extremely proud of our venue’s new look. It was transformed to reflect the changing views and needs of the families who come to us to celebrate the lives of their loved ones. Through extensive consumer research, we found people prefer a facility that offers a sense of calm and tranquility, underpinned by a bright and elegant aesthetic. We hope we have created a place where people can come together and share special memories,” Brown adds.

The newly refurbished venue can also be used for a range of events from open days to meetings, and everything in between, says Brown: “We’ve hosted many events here, including meetings and dinners for the Old Hobartian’s Association, and seminars for grief counsellors. We’re now pleased to open our new doors and continue to be a central part of the community”.
