Dr Fletcher has an intimate knowledge of John Forrest, his role as a colonial explorer and Statesman of Western Australia. His talk will contextualise Forrest’s role in Western Australia as that of initial colonialist to an advocate of governance free from British rule. His lecture will unpack the ideas of how explorers approached arid and desert exploration in other countries and parallel this with the Australian context.

Dr Robert Fletcher, a renowned historian from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom is the author of British Imperialism and ‘The Tribal Question’: Desert Administration and Nomadic Societies in the Middle East, 1919–1936, and in November 2018 published ‘Decolonisation and the Arid World’ in The Oxford Handbook of the End of Empire.
