Le bourgeois gentilhomme is a five-act comedy-ballet in prose written by France's most famous playwright, Molière, in 1670. It's been reinterpreted many times over the centuries, and now, Perth French Theatre is proud to present a contemporary version here in WA, performed in French with English translations projected over the stage.
The "Bourgeois" Mr Jourdain is so focused on becoming a quality person that he ends up becoming quite crazy! His entourage misbehaves and makes him believe wonders: only his wife tries desperately to bring him back to earth. But she too will end up playing with him, because he is too blinded by his crazy hope of becoming someone! Becoming someone!
A cast of crazy characters take Mr Jourdain on a wild ride. The masters: an aging dancer, an unscrupulous musician, an egocentric master of arms, an even more egocentric philosopher, a crazy clothes designer... A hysterical servant, two lackeys obeying like shadows, a wife who is despairing to have this strange man as a husband. A daughter, who wants only one thing: to marry who she wants. The seductive swindler: the good friend, the smart guy who knows how to say the right words to get what he wants. And then, of course, this high society woman, who stands straight, who is like an intruder in this very strange team. She’s the one that makes old Mr Jourdain dream: young, beautiful, elegant and a Marquise! Let's add now the suitor of Mr Jourdain's daughter, and his companion, a devoted and devious friend! This great team will find an outlandish way to unite all lovers.
