Long Way Around is an exquisite and thoughtful body of work informed by the great unknown. This July, in just its second exhibition, aMBUSH Gallery Kambri will illuminate the multifarious happenings of our enigmatic galaxy: exploring space, landscape, the built environment and the effects of mankind, through art.

Long Way Around is a compelling group exhibition that proudly showcases the work of nine Printmedia and Drawing students from The Australian National University’s School of Art and Design as they engage with concepts that take viewers out to the furthest depths, then draw us back to where we came from.

The artists’ pieces scrutinise and comment on political, environmental and scientific themes—made in response to visual, sensory and conceptual elements of the Mt. Stromlo Observatory in Canberra—and link with the scientific research carried out on-site.

The artists employ techniques including etching, illustration, laser cutting, painting, and photography, and have used materials such as paint, aluminium, paper, silk, ink and string to produce multidimensional works that evoke qualities of sound, light and nature.

The exhibition will be shown in conjunction with Moon Week celebrations hosted by ANU and the ACT Government, which comprises of a series of public lectures, workshops, film screenings and tours to showcase Canberra’s burgeoning space industry and local talent, and mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the Moon.

Co-curated by aMBUSH Gallery and Anna Raupach from the ANU School of Art and Design, and presented by aMBUSH Gallery, the full line-up of the show includes:

- Allison Barnes
- Bronte Bell
- Chin-Jie Melodie Liu
- Elizabeth Mogford
- Hannah Hooge
- Isabelle Turner
- Malcolm Fortaleza
- Saskia Morris
- Sydney Farey

Opening night for Long Way Around is on Wednesday, 17 July from 6 to 9pm, with drinks from Capital Brewing plus music by Reuben Ingall.

On Friday, 19 July (from 4:30 to 5:30pm) a special one-off event will be held free of charge to the public in the Gallery, with some of the artists in attendance to discuss their works.

Artworks are for sale (unless specified otherwise). Visit amBUSH Gallery website for more information, and look for aMBUSH Gallery on Facebook and Instagram for exhibition updates.
