Moomba Festival 2019: Birdman Rally

The hilariously spectacular charity event, Birdman Rally—a long-held Moomba favourite—sees competitors attempt to fly over the Yarra River. Aided by a nifty flying machine or simply super-hero bravado, courageous competitors don inventive homemade flying devices as they hurtle themselves over the iconic Melbourne river all in the name of charity.

A fundraising battle unlike any other, the rally will see more Birdman than ever before with 18 participants compete as either fly or flop into the Yarra. These brave competitors are busily raising money for charity in the lead up to their leap. For the first time the Birdman Rally will be introducing an Audience Choice Award allowing spectators to vote for their favourite birdman entry and be in to win prizes.

The Voice contestant Aydan Califiore will also be belting out tunes before Birdman kicks-off and at half-time. A new Birdman Rally program addition not to be missed is a demonstration from the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) premier aerobatic team, the Roulettes, who will perform amazing manoeuvres over the Yarra as part of an interactive flying display.

The Roulettes’ breathtaking displays see them fly within three metres of each other; reach speeds up to 550 kilometres per hour; and fly as low as 75 metres above the ground.
