Perth’s Mt. Mountain return with their third and most powerful full-length release to date: Golden Rise.

Recorded in 2017, Golden Rise marks the band’s second collaboration with producer Ron Pollard (Tangled Thoughts of Leaving, Hideous Sun Demon) at his North Dandalup studio, two hours south-east of Perth. As with their previous album, the conceptually ambitious and sonically expansive Dust, Golden Rise channels the vast landscapes of the band’s hometown of Perth and its diverse surrounds.

Golden Rise sees Mt. Mountain return to the krautrock-infused psychedelia of their 2016 debut, Cosmos Terros. Vocalist Steve Bailey sings with a renewed sense of focus, his delivery ranging from soft-spoken intonations to shaman-like incantations, at once rich with menace and melodic heft. Tracks like Shadow Walk and Interceptor unfold with slow majesty, while the enchanting No Return might us be the band’s most accomplished song to date.

The album also marks the beginning of a collaboration with Penabranca, the New York-based Brazilian artist whose illustration of geometric psychedelia adorns Golden Rise’s front cover. It’s a fitting visual accompaniment that matches the album’s sensibility: at once rooted in form yet floating in an ocean of ephemeral feeling.

In their six years as a band, Mt. Mountain have developed a reputation as one of the most formidable live acts in Western Australia. It’s that reputation that’s seen them support the likes of Sleep, Thee Oh Sees and Tortoise, as well as tour the country multiple times. The psychedelic weight of an album like Golden Rise is best felt in person—eyes forward and ears wide open.

Golden Rise is out now through Cardinal Fuzz (UK/EU) and Little Cloud Records (USA).
