Join us for an afternoon screening of Australian classic film ‘My Brilliant Career’ followed by Q&A with renown Australian film Producer, Margaret Fink. My Brilliant Career, staring celebrated Australian actors Sam Neil, Judy Davis and Wendy Hughes, won several AFI Awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematographer and BAFTA for Best Actress Judy Davis. Telling the story of a headstrong, free-spirited girl growing up in late 19th century Australia, the film bravely challenged the situation of women in society and was considered a ground breaking film of it's time. In 2019, ‘My Brilliant Career’ celebrates 40yrs since it's release.

Guest Speaker: Margaret Fink
Margaret Fink (born Margaret Elliott on 3 March 1933) is an Australian film producer, noted for her important role in the revival of Australian cinema in the 1970s. She was educated at Sydney Girls High School, East Sydney Technical College, Sydney Teachers College and the Sydney Conservatorium. She worked as an art teacher at various high schools in Sydney from 1956 to 1961. Her productions include The Removalists (1975), My Brilliant Career (1979), For Love Alone (1986), Edens Lost (1988) (for TV), and Candy (2006). She was a member of the Sydney Push, a Sydney bohemian group of the 1950s and 1960s that boasted among its membership Lillian Roxon, Germaine Greer, Clive James, and Frank Moorhouse.

While still known as Margaret Elliott, she published Harry Hooton's last book, It Is Great To Be Alive. Her former husband, Leon Fink, is a prominent Sydney businessman and property developer. They married in 1961 and had three children together: Hannah, John and Ben. After their divorce in 1978, they remained living in the same house for a number of years. She has also had relationships with Barry Humphries, Jim McNeil, Bill Harding and Richard Neville. Her daughter, Hannah Fink, is an arts writer. John Fink is a restaurateur and filmmaker. Ben Fink was a member of the band The Whitlams.

Facilitator: Catherine du Peloux Menage
Catherine du Peloux Menagé has worked in educational publishing for many years. She was co-founder of the St Albans Writers’ Festival in 2015 and was its Artistic Director from 2015 to 2018. She has facilitated sessions at that Festival as well as at the Sydney Writers’ Festival, the Rose Scott Writers’ Festival (RSWWF) at the Women’s Club and at libraries around Sydney. She is Secretary of the Dickens Society of NSW and was involved in programming and organising the 2018 Dickens Fellowship Conference in Sydney. She is a member of the RSWWF Committee, the BAD Sydney Crime Writers’ Festival Committee and of the NIB Literary Awards Committee.
