Paper cut quilting is a contemporary quilting technique developed by Martina Latimer, that is decorative and can be adapted to a variety of different creative and practical uses. Martina will introduce you to this technique and help you create a truly personal textile design. During this workshop you will make a piece of textile art using paper cutting and patchwork techniques. Start with a photo of a place, people or memory that you want to cherish and take your inspiration from there.

You will learn to work with colours and its grading by using basic patchwork and sewing techniques. Martina will give you the skills but she will also encourage you to work independently when it comes to colour choices and design decisions. This workshop is ideal for people who are open to new ideas and who want to work artistically with fabrics.

If you want to build on your sewing skills and are keen to allow yourself to explore and play with different ideas, this workshop is for you!

What is provided:
Tuition with a professional quilter and pattern designer
All tools to assist with the process: pins, scissors, iron etc.
Solid fabrics in a range of colours (but please bring fabric of your own as well, see below)
Handout to take home
Light refreshments

What to bring:
This project is about personal expression, so we’d love you to bring some things that you have collected to develop your work.

Please bring:
A memory in the form of a photo of a person, family, a place or something in nature as inspiration.
Ideas and fabric in the colour palette you’d like to use – look at your photo for inspiration.
Fabric swatches should be no bigger than a ‘fat quarter’ (this is 18cm x 22cm).
Please bring your sewing machine (if you have one). People are usually more confident using their own machines. We will have a couple of spares available if you are unable to bring one.
Experience level of participants:
Basic sewing skills. You should have sewn and finished one or two pieces of textiles of any sort.

About Martina Latimer:
Martina Latimer, originally from Austria, is a Brisbane-based textile artist who designs contemporary quilt patterns, teaches quilting for all skill levels and exhibits her art work. In an ‘Australian first’, Martina sewed on air as studio artist of “The Art Show” on ABC Radio National in 2019.

Martina left the corporate world behind in London where she started her creative career. She taught contemporary quilting in London at Sutton College and was a member of the arts collective ‘Muswell Hill creatives’. In 2017 Martina arrived in Brisbane and continued her journey as a textile artist, quilt pattern writer and teacher.

Martina created ‘Paper Cut Quilting’ shortly after arriving in Brisbane, aiming to bring something new to the quilting world. She used the underlying method of Hawaiian quilting and contemporised the process through her use of colours and by moving away from its shape restrictions. Martina created a technique that pays homage to the traditional method and is distinctly modern and progressive at the same time.

Martina is a member of the Brisbane-based art collective ‘The Silk Shed’. She exhibits her art work and quilts in quilting shows and galleries in Australia.
