Rookwood Memorial Gardens and Crematorium is part of the largest cemetery in the southern hemisphere and the last operating Victorian cemetery in the world. The team will host an open day and car show, welcoming the community to explore the venue and take part in a line-up of fun activities.

Gates open at 10am, with activities fit for the whole family including crematorium-behind the scenes tours, family history research, live entertainment, jumping activity centre, food trucks and more. The main attraction will be a car show held in conjunction with Rookwood Memorial Gardens & Crematorium in the main car park, where guests are able to make a gold coin donation to The Friends of Rookwood, a community organisation that aims to preserve and restore the Victorian cemetery.

“We are excited to invite the entire community to learn all about the rich history of Rookwood Memorial Gardens and Crematorium. On the day we will give them a behind the scenes tour with information on the crematorium. We’ll also have a full day of activities for visitors to enjoy,” says Andrew Beatton, Rookwood Memorial Gardens and Crematorium’s Family Service Manager.

Opened in 1925, the site is the oldest and longest serving crematorium in Australia. Today, it continues to be an integral part of Australia’s heritage. The event follows the success of previous Rookwood Open Days and aims to engage the local community in its rich history.

“Not many towns have a place where they can connect with their roots going back to the Victorian era, so it’s important to us that we continue Rookwood’s commitment to care for this community. We hope that by bringing people here we help them understand our memorial park’s long history and remember the great people who have lived here over the generations. This is also a great opportunity to learn all about what we do, and answer any questions the community may have been too scared to ask regarding cremations and funerals.” Andrew Beatton continues.
