Next-generation Suicide Prevention Training. A workshop for health professionals and community workers to support individuals at risk for suicide.

What is SafeSide?

SafeSide is an evidence-informed approach to caring interaction, assessment and support for youth and adults at risk for suicide. The framework provides a common language and simple, practical steps so everyone is ready and clear-minded when patients disclose suicidal thinking.

Four core tasks incorporate best practices for supporting people at risk for suicide—no matter what your setting or role: Connect, Assess, Respond, and Extend. The Care Framework also applies "fluid vulnerability theory" by focusing attention on identifying a person’s available resources and foreseeable changes—triggers that could increase risk—and how to plan for these.

The innovation at the heart of the Care Framework is a risk formulation model developed by SafeSide founder Anthony R. Pisani, Ph.D. and colleagues Daniel Murrie, Ph.D. and Morton M. Silverman, M.D. The Care Framework expands on the Commitment to Living (CTL) curriculum developed by Dr. Pisani.

More than just safe care, it is hope for a full recovery and a life that’s livable again. SafeSide is a framework for recovery-oriented suicide prevention that lifts our sights beyond merely ‘keeping clients safe’ toward a vision of evidence-based care that is truly connected with a client’s needs, experiences, and growth potential.

SafeSide is the next-generation update of Commitment to Living (Pisani, Cross, Watts, & Conner, 2012), an evidence-based workshop that addresses common dilemmas, demands, and rewards of supporting individuals at risk for suicide. Centered on prevention-oriented risk formulation (Pisani, Murrie, & Silverman, 2016).

Every SafeSide workshop is co-led by Kristina Mossgraber who has lived experience of recovery from suicide attempts and mental illness. The lived experience expert deepens the curriculum by sharing experiences in health care that made a positive difference in her life.

SafeSide also features a new set of video-recorded skills demonstrations and these brief demonstrations bring the SafeSide model to life, and drive discussion and practice.

Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to name three foundational goals for forming productive collaborations with clients and their families to address suicide risk.
- In the context of structured screening/assessment tools, participants will be able to name at least two techniques for conveying genuine care about client’s subjective experience.
- Given a scenario, participants will be able to communicate a prevention-oriented risk formulation, orally and in writing.
- Participants will be able to name four key domains to document in a short-term response to suicide risk to facilitate clinical care and minimise liability.
- Participants will be able to state at least two steps their own organisation or program can take to strengthen care transitions.

Who Should Attend:
This workshop is for staff, clinical directors, and training managers in health, behavioural health, and youth services settings. It has application in both clinical and community based settings.
