Bird's Basement

KPS Jam opening for Albare/Urbanity on Saturday 14 September.

KPS Jam are South African born. You can find the lead singer Pebo featured on Albare's 1st album (1993) Acid Love, singing on a track called "way 2 love". KPS Jam is inspired by Stevie Wonder, Jabulani, CDB, playing old school funk and R&B. Don't miss.

Take some deep grooves, add some infectious melodies and you have Urbanity.

Co-led by Latin Grammy Award nominee, guitarist Albare and Grammy Award nominee, pianist Phil Turcio, Urbanity is a band that carries a signature blend of relaxed grooves and melodic interplay.

Their most recent self-titled album was released by US-based label Alfi Records earlier this year. So far, three singles from the album have climbed towards the top of the Smooth Jazz charts in the USA, including an instrumental rendition of The Eagles classic, ‘Desperado’.

Albare doesn't need an introduction to the Melbourne public especially since he opened this very club. Bird's Basement was born out the passion of Albare for music. He is a Latin Grammy Nominee and has been touring the world for 30 years. He played in most clubs in the world and out of that experience we have today Bird's Basement.

Phil Turcio is a pianist, composer and producer who has worked with a variety of music icons, such as Virgil Donati, Jack Jones, Larry Carlton, Richard Marx and of course Albare for the last 28 years.

Urbanity will be joined by two accomplished younger generation players in the Melbourne jazz scene, bassist Kit Riley and drummer Kieran Rafferty.

"Jazz forever evolves” says Albare. “Urbanity is part of the tradition whereby the aim is to drive our listeners into unchartered territories and unconventional topographies while ensuring their feet keep tapping and their hearts singing. For a show to be successful, there must be not a dull moment."

“A prolific player that shows he doesn’t have to be way out there to make his point and have himself heard, it really is like Wes Montgomery riding the space shuttle that’ll take us to Mars.” - Chris Spector, Midwest Record Review

“The simultaneous combination of feelings and emotions, especially when produced by experiences, memories, and stimulations pleasing to the heart, body, and soul.” This describes Albare’s current offerings very well.” - Scott Albin, JazzTimes

“For the uninitiated, the sound of Albare can best be linked to the classic Wes Montgomery meets George Benson riff pulled off with flair and precision.” - Brent Black, Critical Jazz
