Celebrating 100 years, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, (Robert Wiene) is one of the most influential expressionist films of the silent era. Our hero Francis grapples with the deranged Dr. Caligari in a world, which is not quite what it seems. Performed live (piano and electronics), Ashley Hribar's new score is a colourful sonic landscape of musical symbolism inspired by film’s unfolding story.
Ashley Hribar is an Australian born pianist-composer. In 2005 he won the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition and has since performed in countless festivals including the Mersin International Music Festival, En Blanc en Noir Festival, The Port Fairy Spring Festival, Beethovenfest, Ultima Festival and The Gaudeamus Festival. Recent projects include Anatolia (Sydney Opera House) and Sound and Colour in Scriabin’s Piano Sonatas (2017 European Tour).
Ashley’s compositions are poly-stylistic collages. Notable works include A Night in the Outback (2018) and Paganini Variations (2012), the theatre production Betty Rettet die Volksbühne (2017) and soundtracks to silent films Richard III (1910), The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920) and Faust (1926).
