About the film
This political thriller, based on the best-selling book of the same name, is set in early 60s France and follows a professional assassin codenamed “Jackal” as he plots to kill Charles de Gaulle, the President of France.
The film was nominated for an array of awards including three Golden Globe Awards, an Academy Award and several BAFTA Awards. It won a BAFTA for Best Film Editing and was described by many critics as being surprisingly good.
Trivia bite: This film inspired The Jackal (1997) starring Richard Gere and Bruce Willis, however other than the name of the main character, the films have nothing in common. As such the author of the original book, Frederick Forsyth refused to allow his name to be associated with “the remake” and Day of the Jackal director Fred Zinnemann fought with the studio to ensure the films did not share a title.
