Adelaide is one of 64 cities worldwide—and the only Australian city—designated as a UNESCO City of Music. Adelaide has held this status since 2015. When a choir from Hannover, another UNESCO City of Music, announced an Australian tour, the City Council invited Adelaide Philharmonia Chorus to join with them in a concert.

Capella St Crucis is travelling with their conductor, Florian Lohmann, and 50 singers. Beginning in Adelaide, their tour will also include performances in Port Fairy, Geelong, Melbourne and Sydney, finishing with a concert in the Sydney Opera House with the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs at the end of April. This is the third in a series of yearly events under the auspices of UNESCO and the Adelaide City Council to celebrate Adelaide's status as a UNESCO City of Music.

Two choirs, two countries, one celebration!

Award-winning Capella St Crucis comes to Adelaide to celebrate a UNESCO Cities of Music Friendship Concert with Adelaide Philharmonia Chorus. Come with us on a musical journey that celebrates life, love and friendship, the sacred and the poetic.

Capella St Crucis Hannover, conducted by Florian Lohmann, will perform an a cappella program for Passiontide, a journey of sacred choral music from Baroque, via Romantic to Contemporary through the music of J. S. Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Max Reger and James MacMillan. These deeply devotional motets were chosen for their reflection of the motto Media Vita (In the midst of Life), the interweaving of life and death, and celebration of the divine. The interplay of voices expresses enormous variety and colour, from great drama to intimacy and tenderness, inspiring contemplation and fulfilment of the spirit.

Adelaide Philharmonia Chorus, conducted by Aldis Sils, will perform the expressive and dramatic Lamentations of Jeremiah by Randall Stroope, as well as a collection of songs from Ola Gjeilo, John Rutter and Eric Whitacre. Melodically complex, these pieces give expression to love, friendship and poetry through luscious harmonies, changing tempos, ever-expressive dynamics and choral colour.

The choirs will combine to perform two pieces—Ešenvalds’ My Song and Rheinberger’s Abendlied—in an uplifting finale.
