This step-by-step workshop will ensure everyone leaves with the confidence to establish and care for chickens in a typical backyard setting. Whether you have hens already, are taking your first foray into keeping chickens or are just curious, come along to be part of the fun! Kids over 13 welcome to book with an accompanying (ticket-holding) adult.
The 3-hour workshop will begin with the assurance that hens are relatively low maintenance birds that can make great family pets and are an easy way to teach kids the importance of caring for animals.
We will then:
-Explore the Green Connect Farm site to meet the chickens. You will learn how they have been integrated into perennial food systems to help repair the land and yield ethically raised produce.
-Learn the ins and outs of food, shelter and daily tasks of free-range chicken keeping, including how to retain chicken’s natural behaviours and the importance of this.
-Design and discuss options for comfortable, fox-proof shelters using simple materials.
-Learn a special recipe to keep worms at bay.
- And more!
