Have you ever wondered whether Australian plants make good bonsai?Well bonsai artists think they do!

Bonsai artists around Australia have been using Australian plants to create wonderful examples of the art of bonsai for many years. You may have seen the fabulous examples currently on show at the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia at the National Arboretum Canberra.

Canberra Bonsai Society and the Australian National Botanic Gardens are pleased to present the 2018 Exhibition of Australian Plants as Bonsai.

In keeping with the ANBG’s 50th Anniversary in 2020, the exhibition will be a display of over 50 bonsai, suiseki and related items created by Canberra and visiting inter-state artists. The display will highlight the breadth and diversity of the use of Australian plants in the art of bonsai and include some from the personal collections of artists who are currently represented at the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia.

In addition to viewing the bonsai on display, visitors will be able to:
- Attend demonstrations at 2:00pm each day, showcasing the techniques used, and considerations needed, when training Australian plants as bonsai.
- Join guided walks through the Gardens, visiting full sized versions of species represented in the Exhibition. Tours depart from Crosbie Morrison Building at 12:00pm daily. Groups will be restricted to 15 participants.
- Vote for their favourite bonsai, and
- Buy tickets in the raffle. Prizes will be an Australian native bonsai and two books on Australian plants (separate prizes).

In 2020, CBS and the ANBG will also be hosting a symposium on growing Australian plants as bonsai in parallel with the exhibition. The symposium includes presentations, advanced workshops and a ‘Beginning bonsai with Australian plants’ workshop, which will be held over the 2 days of the weekend. Full details, including the program and registration, are available on the Canberra Bonsai Society website.
