Kingston Arts celebrates the 50th anniversary of our famous Wurlitzer Theatre Organ finding its home at Kingston City Hall with two programs of classic movies, with the first half of each program to be scored live with the Wurlitzer. After all, that’s what it was made for!

The first program, on Saturday 9 May, is 'The Prophetic Genius of Charlie Chaplin', which features two of Chaplin's funniest early shorts plus his brilliant depiction of totalitarian madness in The Great Dictator. The short films screening are The Adventurer—featuring one of the great chase sequences in cinematic history—and The Immigrant, which explores the challenges, both comic and tragic, faced by those forced to find a new home in an often hostile new country.

Both these films will be scored live by renowned cinema organist John Atwell on the mighty Kingston Wurlitzer. These films will be followed by Chaplin's famous comic take on Nazism, with The Great Dictator (screened with its original soundtrack), a film that is perhaps as relevant as it was in 1940, given the rise of populism around the world today.

The second program, on Friday 13 November, is 'The Horror, The Horror', presenting F.W. Murnau's legendary silent horror film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror—with live soundtrack by John Atwell on the mighty Wurlitzer—and Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (with its own, original score). Nosferatu is based on the novel that started the vampire craze—"Dracula" by Bram Stoker, and features one of the creepiest vampire-villains of all time. A far cry from Twilight and True Blood. Followed by Jack Nicholson as one of the all-time great crazed villains in The Shining, and you have a recipe for a frightfully good night at the movies!

Please note: entry for each event includes all films screened on that date only. The two events are ticketed separately.
