In celebration of International Women's Day, guest speakers discuss the greater strength of women in the arts, including former CEO of Metro Arts Liz Burcham, award winning author of 'The Killing of Louisa,' Dr. Janet Lee, and stand-up comedian Anna Brennen.

Liz Bucham Liz is an arts manager and producer. Her career has spanned the breadth of the Creative Industries from book and newspaper publishing, to digital media and the arts. As a producer she has stretched her skills from the Sydney Olympics to AFL, to independent performance works. She was the CEO of Metro Arts and led its formative evolution into a contemporary arts incubator. She was the Cultural Director for 4 years with the City of Newcastle responsible for creating a strategy to see culture play a pivotal role in the city’s urban renewal.

Dr Janet Lee won the Emerging Queensland Writer category in the 2017 Queensland Literary Awards for her Manuscript ‘The Killing of Louisa’. The Killing of Louisa was published by University of Queensland Press in 2018, shortlisted for the 2019 Davitt Awards in two categories, and has now also been published as an audio book. Janet is currently working on an historical novel.

Anna Brennen, a stand-up comedian and comedy event curator, is a woman of many talents and skills. After staring her comedy career in Melbourne in 2014, Anna went onto run open mic comedy shows on the Sunshine Coast and MCing for events including Horizon and Anywhere Festival. In 2018, Anna performed her first solo stand-up comedy show at the Bris Funny Fest, and in 2019, her one act play, 'Tinderella', won the People’s Choice Award at Comedy Shorts and Stand Up at the Majestic Theatre in Pomona. Anna’s talents also extend to fiction writing, acting, poetry, podcasting, the visual arts, producing events, tea drinking and op-shopping!

Held in conjunction with 'Constellations,' an exhibition by award winning multimedia artist Donna Maree Robinson and local mentoree Tiarn Florence, celebrating the women who prioritised bravery and trusted their visions. Supported by WINDO Inc. Official exhibition opening Saturday 22 February 2020, 5pm.
