Stephen Joshua Sondheim was born on 22 March 1930 and is one of the most important figures in 20th century musical theatre. He has been praised for "reinventing the American musical" with shows that tackled "unexpected themes" and "music and lyrics of unprecedented complexity and sophistication". With a slew of awards including an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards, eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, a Laurence Olivier Award, and a 2015 US Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Sondheim on Sondheim is an intimate portrait of the famed songwriter in his own words...and music. Through the use of exclusive interview footage, audiences will get an inside look at the personal life and artistic process of this famed composer.

The concert will feature some of Sondheim’s greatest songs from West Side Story, Gypsy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Evening Primrose, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods, plus many more!

The celebratory performance brings together three-time Lawrence Olivier Award winner Philip Quast and the remarkable Anne Wood (Mamma Mia!), acclaimed Australian artists Jason Barry-Smith, Jarrod Draper, Alister Kingsley, Naomi Price and Patrice Tipoki plus four Bachelor of Musical Theatre degree students from Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.

The 60-piece Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra will present the Australian premiere of the full symphony orchestra arrangements created especially for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra concert at the Hollywood Bowl.
